How to play Roulette

Roulette is a very simple game to play. A player can bet on an individual number or combinations of roulette numbers. Or bet all the odd or even numbers, red or black colours, there are lot's of ways to bet at roulette. Also a roulette system driven bet or a roulette strategy is employed, betting a whole group of predetermined roulette numbers. Where they gamble on a game of chance. Gambling on the ball coming to rest in one of their chosen predicted compartments of the roulette wheel and winning the bet. Roulette is a French origin word that means 'small wheel or little wheel'

Roulette is a casino table game. Players can choose between three types of roulette games. European roulette along with French roulette the original roulette with single zero wheels or American roulette which has an extra double zero number slot.

A short explanation of the game is, a wheel is spun in one direction, then a ball is spun in the opposite direction by a croupier, on to a very slightly cone shaped revolving wheel (called a roulette wheel) with a valley like base comprising of numbered colour compartments.

As the roulette balls magnitude of rotation against the surface of the wheel reduces it slows down, centrifugal forces of the ball reduce causing it to be pulled down by gravity in a spiralling motion until it's mesmerizing, hypnotic rolling and gently oscillating acoustic journey breaks like a wave hitting the rocks of the shoreline in a chaotic melee of directions. Bouncing the roulette ball wildly up in the air, ricocheting over the pockets until it comes to a complete rest in one of the numbered and coloured roulette wheel pockets.

Roulette Table layout

An overview of the roulette table layout goes like this, a player or players at the edge of the table place coloured chips down on the various areas marked out on the normally green coloured cloth covering the table. Sectioned in to either numbered squares relating to each of the numbered and coloured wells of the roulette wheel.

The squares on the roulette table layout also match the colours of the roulette wheel numbers red, black and one green sometimes two green. The green square/squares are the largest at the top for the zero number, or zero and double zero numbers depending on which genre of roulette game. European roulette (single zero), French roulette (single zero) or American roulette (single and double zero). The betting layout is described as outside bets and inside bets. Outside betting are the marked areas of the table that surround the main number squares 1-36 plus the zero square/squares. Listed below.

Roulette Bets

Outside bets
  • Bet on Odd or Even roulette numbers on American Roulette table. On a French Roulette table Impair or Pair.
  • Bet on Black or Red colour . French roulette table Noire or Rouge
  • Betting 1st dozen or first 12 numbers of roulette table 1 - 12. French Roulette Duzaine.
  • Betting 2nd dozen or second 12 numbers 13 - 24.
  • Betting 3rd dozen or third 12 numbers 25 - 36.
  • Bets on 1 - 18 covers the first half of the table. French Roulette Manqué.
  • Bets on 19 - 36 covers the second half. French Roulette Passé.
  • Column bets is the 12 numbers of each 3 vertical columns. French Roulette Colonne. .

Inside bets

Table layout of the Inside bets are the main oblong block of individual core numbers relating directly to the roulette wheel numbers. Set out in 12 rows of 3 numbers and 3 columns of 12 numbers. Creating a grid of 1-36. Listed below.

  • Straight bet or straight-up bet on European and American Roulette tables. Roulette wheel numbers related to the numbered squares 1 - 36 on the table, betting on one single number is known in the roulette game as a straight bet. On a French Roulette table the terminology is a Plain bet.
  • Straight bets can also be placed on 0 zero and/or double zero 00 at the top of the table.
  • Street bet. Or Transversal Plain in French roulette. Betting chips on a single row of 3 numbers, e.g. 31 32 33 there are 12 rows to pick from. Players sometimes bet two or three rows next to each other, thereby capturing a block of numbers that are in numerical sequence. Using a mix of bets e.g. corner bet + split bets. Sometimes shifting this combined block of inside bets around the table, say for instance single numbers have come up twice in the last five spins, gambling on the probability of a couple more dropping, the block of bets would be taken off the area currently being wagered and moved to encapsulate the single numbers area and betting on street 1 2 3, street 4 5 6 and street 7 8 9.
  • Corner bet. Or Carre in French Roulette. chip or chips placed in the centre of four numbers i.e. covering the corners of all four table numbers.
  • Split bet or Cheval in French roulette, is placed between two numbers.
  • Trio bet, chip is placed to cover either numbers 1, 2,and 0. Or 2, 3 and 0 in European roulette.
  • Online roulette games incorporate these inside betting features, when your pointer moves over the board the various bets e.g. the split bet. Will show up when the pointer is moved over a line connecting two different numbers also showing what odds the bet gives.

Roulette house edge

American Roulette

The house edge is average amount the player loses on every bet or wager they make. In the American roulette game the probability is 1 in 38 chance the player will win 35 times the wagered bet. But a 37 in 38 chance the player loses the wagered bet. The house edge for the American roulette game is worked out thus: -1 x 37/38 + 35 x 1/38 = -0.0526 = 5.26% house edge average gain on each bet player makes.

European Roulette and French Roulette

The house edge is a lot less in the European roulette game because it has one number less than the American roulette wheel, the probability is now a 1 in 37 chance the player will win 35 times the wagered bet. And a lower 36 in 37 chance the player loses the wagered bet. So the house edge for European roulette game is now much lower, working out to just: -1 x 36/37 + 35 x 1/37 = -0.0270 = 2.70% house edge average gain on each bet player makes.

Zero house edge

A simpler way of looking at the house edge is if we removed the single zero from European Roulette wheel the house edge percentage would now be 0% because there are now only the 36 numbers in play and each number that wins returns 35 to 1 plus your wager. The same is true for American Roulette, if again we remove the single and double zero's from the roulette wheel, the casino house edge is non existent. So with an extra slot or more, above 36 slots there is less chance of winning back all of the money on each bet you make, therefore giving the casino a slight advantage. Still, how many games do you know that give great odds like 35 to 1? Not many I'd bet.

Roulette wheel's, what's the difference

The roulette wheel is a contrasting theme of reds and blacks, broken by the green single and/or double zero slot. There are numbered compartments from zero 1 to 36, the French and European roulette wheels begin with the green coloured zero 0 number then each number change's repeatedly between the contrasting roulette signature colours of red and black. American roulette, has an extra green compartment a double zero 00.

Double Zero 00 the extra compartment added to the American roulette wheel diagonally opposite the single zero 0. But this isn't the only modification made to the American wheel of the original European/French roulette wheel. The sequence of wheel numbers is completely different.

Roulette Strategy

Traditional roulette strategy such as voisins du zero that bet a major set piece of the wheel sector compared with the neighbor bet a small variable chosen sector, have just as much chance of succeeding in finding a win and making a profit as each other.

The traditional French roulette, wheel section betting strategies listed below can be found in some online casinos, they sometimes call the roulette game "pro roulette" giving you the option to click on the various call bets, predetermined sections of the wheel. Like "tiers du cylindre" for instance, where the numbers on the roulette table light up according to which strategy clicked on. Like having a virtual croupier or dealer, just so you don't need to recall all the strategies from memory. Rather good in practice too.

Sometimes in online roulette the ball keeps dropping around a certain sector of the wheel, if you check the last spins window of the game and keep comparing it to the displayed strategies in the game window. You can usually pick up on a sector that has been cropping up regularly or a sector just at the beginning of its genesis. One that I play very often is "Orphelins" a double section strategy of 3 numbers almost diagonally opposite a larger sector of 5 numbers. If black 17 drops I always seem to find that the ball switches sides of the wheel. Somewhere over and in between the next 10 spins to the black 20 or red 14, those numbers by the way are part of the orphelins called bets strategy?

Roulette Neighbors

Choosing any number and betting the numbers either side of it called a neighbors bet or a five piece bet in roulette, an example of this if we take the number 7 as the chosen number on the European roulette wheel we would bet the numbers 18 29 7 28 12 normally a $1 straight up on each number.

In American roulette the neighbor numbers of 7 would be 30 11 7 20 32 because of the different wheel layout and the extra double zero.

Voisins du Zero

European roulette wheel section of numbers covering nearly the top half of the wheel around the zero 0, (17 numbers in Voisins du Zero sector) in total. From 22 to 25 the wheel sequence going clockwise from 22 is > 22 18 29 7 28 12 35 3 26 0 32 15 19 4 21 2 25 .

Nine chips are bet usually in this combination on the (inside bet table area) >

2 chips on the 0, 2, 3 trio bet.

1 split bet on 4 and 7.

1 split bet on 12 and 15.

1 split bet on 18 and 21.

1 split bet on 19 and 22.

2 chips on a corner bet for 25, 26, 28, 29.

1 split bet on 32 and 35.

Tiers du cylindre | third of the wheel

Wheel section bet tiers du cylindre is possibly the most popular of all call bets used as a roulette strategy.

Roulette wheel sequence number clockwise 27 13 36 11 30 8 23 10 5 24 16 33.

6 chips are bet. 1 chip on each of the splits. 5 and 8, 10 and 11, 13 and 16, 23 and 24, 27 and 30, 33 and a straight bet on 36.

Popular variation of tiers.

If not the full tiers is bet, a variation of it is widely played like betting between and including 13 and 5. Straight bet on each. Though it doesn't make for a well planned strategy just to play either of these wheel section bets constantly which I see happening with a lot of players. I normally wait for an few occurrences of the roulette ball settling in this area before playing it.

 Orphelins | Orphans

Two sectors of the roulette wheel used in this strategy first side is 17, 34, 6 almost directly opposite is the second sector 1, 20, 14, 31, 9.

5 chips are bet.

1 chip straight-up on 1.

1 chip on the splits 6 and 9, 14 and 17, 17 and 20, finally 31 and 34.

Roulette Systems

Martingale System

Progression betting on red and black. The Martingale system is a roulette strategy that dates back to the 18th century. It begins by betting on red or black after a sequence of it's opposite colour has changed. So the last two numbers fallen are opposite to each other, you would start a $1 dollar bet on the opposite to last colour to come out.

For instance if black bet on red, spin again if still black double bet on red to $2 dollars, keep doubling bet on red until red lands and you win. Makes sense at first, how can you possibly lose? Well doubling your wager again and again for very common same colour sequence in online roulette would play like this $1 + $2 + $4 + $8 + $16 + $32 + $64 + $128 + $256 + $512 and if still continues to come out black after this +$1024 + $2048 + $4096 + $8192 + $16,384 + $32,768 that's up to 16 spins. Add all these bets up it comes to a total whopping roulette wager of $57,344. Total profit if that 16th colour was red and you won. $1 measly dollar profit. Wow! Remember most of the time there would only be small runs of each roulette colour, so profit would build over a period of a few hundred spins, plus you could start the initial bet off as $5 dollars to win $5 dollars per run. You hope.

It has been witnessed and observed in online roulette many times to have a run of up to 20 times in sequence of the same colour. Still not convinced. The online casino places a table limit to bet on all of the different types of bets, including betting on black and red. So if the roulette table maximum on betting colours is $1000 dollars, you wouldn't be able to continue betting after only 9 spins of the roulette wheel. Even if there were no limitations on the wager. No table limit maximum, would you have the funds to continue anyway? I tested the Martingale system out on a playtech casino in fun play and it worked playing over 200 spins, then I played with real money and it worked again playing another 200 spins, until I came across 12 reds in a row and lost everything I had gained over the two days. But life's a gamble It may work out well for another. Be warned, be very careful and be lucky.

Advantage play Roulette Rules

French Roulette la partage

Microgaming online casinos offer French Roulette which plays the La Partage rule. This rule allows you to lose only half your even money bets when the zero hits. Reducing the casino house edge to 1.38%.

Roulette: How much of a gamble should you take?

That really depends on what you truly understand. When playing against random chance in roulette, you had best gamble for low stakes or, better yet, place no bet at all. You need to put all you've got into the few near certainties that you can predict. It's not a question of all luck, but of information that you believe you can trust. Experiment with its accuracy and then take a brave step forward into the (not so random) unknown.
